Consumers of Indian generics often encounter products sold at a significant discount or labeled as "Markdown" or "Clearance." It is important to understand that Indian generics (Sildenafil, Tadalafil, Dapoxetine, etc.) are already a budget-friendly category of medications, priced significantly lower than their original brands.
When you see an additional markdown on an already inexpensive product, it is almost always due to one of the three reasons discussed below.
This is the most common and honest reason for a markdown.
What it means: The product is absolutely legitimate, high-quality, and safe, but its expiration date is approaching (e.g., 3-6 months remaining).
The Mechanics: Pharmacies and distributors are obligated to sell this stock before the indicated date. To accelerate sales and avoid losses, they reduce the price by 30-70%.
Is it safe? Yes, absolutely. The medication retains 100% of its efficacy and safety until the last day printed on the blister pack. If you plan to use the medication within the next few months, this is the most cost-effective way to purchase it.
Consultant's Advice: Always check the exact "expiry date" on the packaging or blister pack before purchasing a discounted item.
This is the second most common reason, typical for e-commerce.
What it means: During transport or storage, the product's cardboard box was damaged (torn, crumpled, or wet).
Integrity: However, the blister or sachet (the internal, sealed packaging) remains intact.
Is it safe? Yes. If the blister is undamaged, the medication is completely safe. A damaged cardboard box does not affect the chemical composition of the tablet. Stores discount such items because they have lost their "presentable" appearance.
Consultant's Advice: Carefully inspect the blister pack itself. If it is also punctured, the foil is compromised, or the tablet is crushed, you should refuse the purchase.
This is a dangerous category that requires extreme caution. Sometimes, under the guise of a "markdown" or "stock liquidation," the following may be sold:
Counterfeits (Fakes): Products of unknown origin that may not contain the active ingredient or, worse, contain harmful impurities.
Improper Storage: Medications that were stored in substandard conditions (e.g., in excessive heat or humidity). They may have lost their effectiveness, even if the expiration date is still valid.
Consultant's Advice: If you are offered a product at a huge discount, but it has perfect packaging and a fresh expiration date, it is a cause for suspicion. There are no miracles, and such a discount may indicate the questionable origin of the product.
A markdown on Indian generics is a good and safe purchase in only two scenarios:
If you are buying from a verified, reputable seller who transparently states the reason for the markdown (e.g., "expires 01/2026").
If you are able to use the medication before this expiration date.
In all other cases, an extremely low price should arouse suspicion, not excitement. Remember, generics are serious medications with strict contraindications (especially intake with nitrates), and their quality directly impacts your health.
