In recent years, the pharmaceutical market has been actively developing solutions for female sexual dysfunction (FSD). However, unlike male erectile dysfunction (ED), which is predominantly a vascular problem, female sexuality is much more multifaceted and complex.
The term "pills for women" (often mistakenly called "Female Viagra") encompasses several classes of drugs with completely different mechanisms of action. They target different aspects of dysfunction:
Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD): Difficulty achieving physical arousal, insufficient natural lubrication, and low sensitivity of erogenous zones, even when desire is present.
Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD): Reduced or absent libido (sexual desire) that causes personal distress.
It is crucial to understand that a drug designed for one problem is completely useless for the other.
These are drugs that are analogues to male Viagra in their mechanism of action. Their use for women is "off-label" but widely practiced.
Active Ingredients: Sildenafil (100 mg) or Tadalafil (10-20 mg).
Common Names: Lovegra, Tadadel FM, Tadalis, Tadacip, Vidalista (female versions).
These drugs are PDE5 inhibitors. In women, they work the same way as in men but target different organs. In the presence of sexual stimulation (when the brain is already sending "desire" signals), Sildenafil or Tadalafil blocks the PDE5 enzyme, which leads to:
Increased Blood Flow: Causes powerful relaxation of the smooth muscles of blood vessels in the pelvic region.
Genital Engorgement: Increases blood flow to the clitoris and labia minora.
Enhanced Lubrication: Improved blood supply to the vaginal mucosa stimulates the Bartholin's glands, leading to more abundant natural lubrication.
As a result, the woman experiences a more intense physical arousal. The sensitivity of the clitoris and erogenous zones increases, touch feels more acute, and achieving orgasm becomes significantly easier. The effect of Sildenafil (Lovegra) lasts 4-6 hours; Tadalafil (Tadadel FM) lasts up to 36 hours.
These drugs do not affect libido. If a woman has no sexual desire (HSDD), the pill will not work. It does not "turn on" desire; it only enhances the physical response to pre-existing mental arousal.
Contraindications are identical to those for men:
Absolutely forbidden to take with any form of nitrates (Nitroglycerin).
Severe cardiovascular diseases, recent heart attack or stroke.
Pregnancy and lactation.
This is a fundamentally different class of drugs that emerged relatively recently. They do not act on blood vessels but on brain neurochemistry.
Active Ingredient: Flibanserin (100 mg).
Common Names: Addyi (original), Fliban.
Flibanserin is a neuromodulator developed to treat HSDD (low libido) in premenopausal women. It is not an instant-action aphrodisiac. Its job is to restore the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain:
It decreases the level of "inhibitory" serotonin.
It increases the levels of "excitatory" dopamine and norepinephrine.
With regular use, Flibanserin helps restore lost sexual desire (libido). It is aimed at helping a woman experience sexual thoughts and desire again.
Fliban (Flibanserin) is NOT an "on-demand" pill. You cannot take it an hour before sex and get results. It is a course-based medication taken daily, once a day (at bedtime), over a long period (several weeks or months) to achieve a stable therapeutic effect.
Absolute ban on alcohol: The combination of Flibanserin and alcohol causes a dangerous drop in blood pressure (hypotension) and fainting (syncope).
Severe liver disease.
Taking CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., Ketoconazole).
These are over-the-counter supplements, often in liquid form (drops), that use herbal extracts.
Common Names: Spanish Gold Fly, Silver Fox, and others.
Mechanism of Action: They usually contain a combination of L-Arginine (for blood flow) and herbal adaptogens (Ginseng, Maca, Muira Puama) to increase general tone and slightly stimulate libido.
Efficacy: The clinical efficacy of these products is unproven and highly variable. They may provide a mild stimulating and placebo effect.
Female sexual dysfunction is a complex issue at the intersection of gynecology, endocrinology, and psychology. Before taking any of the aforementioned medications, a consultation with a gynecologist and/or sexologist is essential.
Diagnosis First: A doctor must rule out obvious causes for low libido or arousal, such as:
Hormonal imbalance (low estrogen, testosterone issues).
Depression or chronic stress.
Side effects from other medications (e.g., antidepressants or oral contraceptives).
Relationship problems.
Choosing the Right Drug: Only after determining the cause (a problem with desire vs. a problem with physical arousal) can a doctor recommend the correct class of medication: Flibanserin (for libido) or Tadalafil/Sildenafil (for arousal).
